Nationals 2010

The Inaugural Traditional Shotokan Karate Federation Australian National Championships were held at the University of Western Australia's Sports and Recreation Centre in Perth, WA from the 22nd - 27th March 2010. A team of 50 students and supporters from Geraldton Karate Academy (GKA) lead by Sensei Pasco Costantino, travelled down for this prestigious event.

Competitors from all states of Australia, New Zealand and Japan attended the occasion, in what promised to be a very memorable experience for all.

The week comprised of a three and a half day training seminar, conducted by Chief Instructor Takahashi Shihan, 8th Dan. This was followed by a much deserved day's rest, followed by a full day of competition on the Saturday.

Monday began the gruelling series of training sessions, with 2 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the afternoon. The basics of karate-do were covered, focusing on technique, speed and spirit. After such a hard training session, everyone was tested when we experienced the worst storm Perth had seen in 50 years. It was a massive day for all, and certainly an event not to be forgotten - especially by our visitors.

Tuesday and Wednesday followed with further vigorous training sessions. The weather was much kinder, however training was not. Students were put through hours of kicking drills and kata training, which truly tested the endurance and spirit of all who attended.

Friday had another half-a-day training for the black belts - who thought Takahashi Shihan would go lightly. However he put them through more kicking drills and kata training until barely anyone could move their legs.

Saturday, everyone was up bright and early for competition. The competition was of a very high standard, Geraldton Karate Academy (GKA) performing exceptionally well, coming away with 11 gold medals, 10 silver medals and 11 bronze medals. Jason Merritt fought well in the Australian team for the test match, Australia vs. New Zealand, assisting them to a well-deserved victory. Alicia Costantino also performed highly, winning the TSKF Senior Female Spirit award.

Sensei Pasco was extremely pleased with the efforts of his students and is looking ahead to the state championships later on in the year. Competition was of a very high standard, and the members of GKA performed exceptionally well. I wish to thank all who assisted with the preparation of the event - it was tough, but we managed to overcome all obstacles to make it a very successful week.

The Traditional Shotokan Karate Federation Australian National Championships are to be held in Hobart, Tasmania in February, 2011.
