History of Geraldton Karate AcademyThe Geraldton Karate Academy (GKA) was formed in 1995 when the club relocated
from the old PCYC building in Gregory St where for 19 years; it was known as the Geraldton PCYC JKA
Karate Club. Sensei Pasco Constantino (4th Dan) has been the chief instructor and dojo head since 1984.
Sensei Pasco originally commenced training under the Budokan style (similar to Shotokan) in 1976 with instructor Carl Marriot. The club soon after decided to change to the Shotokan style under the Karate Union of Australia (KUA). When Carl Marriot relocated to Perth, Sensei Pasco took over the role as chief instructor as the highest ranking belt. In 1988 the club decided to join the Japanese Karate Association (JKA) and all students were required to re-grade under the new governing body of karate. Amongst those students, many have gone on to achieve success and recognition in JKA karate. Andrew Carey (4th Dan) started training in 1977 and in addition to founding his own dojo, Carey's Martial Arts in 1998, has also been a State and National Representative many times. Another student from this era Aaron Renwick (2rd Dan) and more recently Aleisha Constantino (Shodan) and Sigourney Weldon (Shodan) have all been selected for the National team and competed in the World Shoto Cup. The Geraldton Karate Academy Dojo is located at the Carson Street Campus gymnasium of the Geraldton Secondary College with Junior and Senior classes twice a week. In addition there are beginner classes held once a week at the Geraldton Grammar School and an introductory Little Tigers karate/acro class for 4-8yr olds to further develop and enhance our junior members who are the life blood of our future. |
